SEACOAST AREA

Easy Day-Trips   From    TwoVillage Square

The Atlantic coast of New Hampshire and the southern tip of Maine are often referred to as the "Seacoast Area".

  • Portsmouth, NH is the largest city in the immediate area.  Located just 16 miles south of Ogunquit across the Piscataqua River, it was a colonial ship-building town. The narrow streets of  Market Square  adjoin the Strawberry Banke Village of restored buildings, (a smaller scale Williamsburg VA).  Outside its fences, present day citizens live in historic brick or frame buildings near the waterfront. Quaint shops and cozy restaurants abound, some overlooking the harbor tugboats tied up nearby.  Boat trips to the Isle of Shoals are available, as well as tours of a locally-built, now decommissioned submarine.  Portsmouth is the gateway to the White Mountains and the Lake Winnipisaukee resort areas.

  • Kittery, ME located on Route 1 just 14 miles South of Ogunquit.  Kittery is home to countless ootlet stores and is especially busy on non-beach days.

  • Wells, ME is the next town North of Ogunquit, and offers an Antique Auto Museum and the Rachel Carson Wildlife Preserve.

  • Kennebunkport, ME is a  quaint waterfront village noted as the summer home of the Bush clan.  Visit a charming downtown, neat shops, excellent restaurants, and take an Ocean Avenue tour past Walker Point, the Bush enclave, on a drive to the village of Cape Porpoise.

  • Kennebunk, ME is located inland of her waterfront sister town on Route 1, connected by Route 35 and a wonderful collection of old sea captains' homes.  The Brick Store Museum of artifacts and costumes is located on Main Street in an assortment of restored buildings. Just North in the community of Arundel is the Trolley Museum, a treasure trove of streetcars from many cities of the country and world.

  • Portland, ME, the largest city in the state, overlooks the sailing waters of Casco Bay.  A  renovated Old Port District lines the waterfront, its ferries  carrying commuters from the downtown to their island homes.  The Portland Museum of Art, designed by I. M. Pei, mounts several respected exhibits each season.

  • Freeport, ME is the home of the famed LL Bean outdoor gear for more than a century.  Open 24 hours a day 365 days a year, the store has a trout stream, canoes and kayaks, clothing and shoes of all kinds. The store and surrounding outlets are about 75 minutes North of Ogunquit.

  • Bar Harbor, ME is the town located on Mount Desert Island and within  Acadia National Park , the most visited of national parks.  Cadillac Mountain offers unparalleled ocean views, old carriage trails created by the Rockefellers are now bike paths, and a few of the old summer "cottages" remain as reminders of the grandeur that existed before the great fire that destroyed much of the town.  About four and one/half hours trip from Ogunquit.
